The wooden Trinity Church was built on the site of today's cathedral as early as 1645. In 1682 the Kristiansand diocese was founded and an episcopal church became necessary. The Erlöserkirche, which was consecrated in 1696, was built in place of the wooden church. It burned down in 1734, but the second cathedral was consecrated in 1738. This church also burned down in 1880, but some of the walls could be reused. As a result, the main altar of today's cathedral had to be set up in the west instead of the east.
The current neo-Gothic church was designed by Henrik-Thrap-Meyer and completed in 1885. During the German raid on Kristiansand in 1940, a shell hit the top of the church tower, causing relatively little damage. With a total length of 70 meters and a width of 39 meters, it is one of the largest churches in the country. The height of the tower is also 70 meters. It is therefore more than twice as large as the previous church. Originally there was space for over 2000 people in the church, but to date the number of seats has been reduced to 1500. In 1934 the church underwent a first restoration. The silver baptismal font was saved from the old cathedral.

Main organ of Klais (2013)
The famous organ builder Gottfried Heinrich Gloger built a new organ for the church in 1746 . After the fire in 1880, the organ builder August Nielsen was commissioned to build a new organ. The new instrument had 37 registers and was in service from 1885 to 1966. When it was lost, the Göttingen organ builder Paul Ott replaced the work with an organ with 55 registers, which were divided into three manuals and a pedal . The organ was shut down in 2011 and temporarily replaced by an electric organ.
Today's organ of the cathedral church was built in 2013 by the organ building workshop Klais (Bonn). It consists of the main organ on the east gallery and a choir organ on the north gallery. Both instruments can be controlled from a four-manual console, which is located on the main organ, and from a mobile four-manual console in the nave. The main organ has 58 stops on four manuals and a pedal. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric. The casings of the two sub-units were designed based on the casing of the predecessor organ by Nielsen (1885).
