Kristján Jónsson (writer)
The writer Kristján Jónsson , also: Kristján Jónsson Fjallaskáld (born June 20, 1842 at the Krossdalur farm in Kelduhverfi , North Iceland ; † April 9, 1869 in Kópavogur , Iceland) was an Icelandic poet .
Life
Kristján Jónsson was born in 1842 on the Krossdalur farm in northern Iceland, not far from Ásbyrgi , which still exists today . However, the family moved to another farm four years later, to Auðbjargarstaðir , a farm that has since been abandoned. He was lying just south of the lagoon Lónslón , close to today runs there via road no. 85 . Kristján grew up there, but most of the time as a half-orphan, as his father had died a year after moving.
When she was twelve, Kristján came to live with relatives at Ærlækjarsel on Öxarfjörður . In the following years he worked as a farmhand on various farms in the area.
Under these circumstances Kristján could not acquire a proper school education, only basic knowledge at first, which he, however, expanded as an avid reader and self-taught . Finally, he found financial support from relatives and friends who enabled him - he was already 21 years old - to study in what was then the Latin school in Reykjavík . He attended this school from 1864 to 1868, but then dropped out without a degree. The reasons are not known exactly, poverty and alcohol problems may have played a role.
In Reykjavík he was involved in cultural life and made z. B. the acquaintance of Matthías Jochumsson .
Back in the north, he was offered a job and now worked for the Danish merchant Gustav Iversen in Vopnafjörður until he was far too early in 1869, d. H. At the age of only 26, died.

He began to poetry at an early age and gained such a reputation in the area that he was nicknamed Fjallaskáld ( mountain poet ) after a work stay at the Hólsfjöll farm .
His main topic was the nature of his homeland, e.g. B. the Dettifoss waterfall .
During his years in Reykjavík he wrote numerous poems. These are still popular today, and many of them were set to music, such as Þorraþrællinn 1866 ( Nú er frost á Fróni ).
