Krobia xinguensis is a freshwater fish in the family of cichlids (Cichlidae) that occurs in the southeastern Amazon basin in the catchment area of ​​the Rio Xingu and in its headwaters in the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil . The species was scientifically described for the first time in 2012 and was previously known to aquarists under the name Krobia “Red cheek”.

Krobia xinguensis becomes about 8.5 cm long and has a high-backed body that is oval in side view. The rear trunk above the anal fin is severely flattened. The head and muzzle are short. The head profile rises steeply from the mouth and then bends significantly backwards above the eyes. The eyes are big; its diameter is greater than the length of its mouth. The maxillary reaches below the front edge of the eyes, the jaw joint lies below the center of the eyes. The lips are thin. Both jaws have relatively blunt, straight or slightly curved teeth, with the teeth of the inner rows of teeth being smaller than those of the outer ones. The tail stalk is noticeably short and higher than that of other Krobia species. The caudal fin is rounded. The soft-rayed sections of the dorsal and anal fin, as well as the pectoral and pelvic fins are pointed.

The basic color of Krobia xinguensis is whitish, light gray or light yellow-brown. On the sides of the body there are seven, only indistinctly visible horizontal stripes. The upper lip, parts of the cheeks, the anterior and posterior edges of the gill cover, and the base of the pectoral fin are red or orange. The bases of numerous scales on the sides of the body are also red or orange. There are two dark stripes between the eyes.

habitat

There is little information about the natural habitat of Krobia xinguensis . Among other things, the species was found in small lakes and in clear streams with stony bottoms, rich vegetation and a lush invertebrate fauna.
