Kronschlot or Kronslot is a sea fortress from the 18th century off the island of Kotlin , today's Kronstadt in the Gulf of Finland . Nowadays only the remains of the fortress can be found.

The fortress city of Kronstadt is located on the Baltic island of Kotlin, 30 kilometers west of Saint Petersburg. Fort Kronschlot is located on two small islands in front of the port.

history

Shortly after the conquest of the Neva estuary by Russian army units in 1703 in the Great Northern War , construction of Saint Petersburg began on the Neva estuary . The city was to become the new Russian capital and represent Russia's window to the west. In 1704, further fortifications were built on the island off Saint Petersburg to protect the access to Saint Petersburg from Swedish attacks from the sea.

To the south of Kotlin, Kronschlot was built by soldiers under the direction of Alexander Danilowitsch Menshikov . The fort consisted of a three-story tower . The material used consisted of brick and wood. The tower stood on a foundation made of wooden stakes. The tower was armed with 14 cannons. On May 7, 1704 the fort was put into operation. The day is also the founding date of Kronstadt. Shortly thereafter, repeated attacks by the Swedish fleet against Kronstadt followed until 1706 . All attacks could be repulsed by the sea. Extensive renovation work was carried out from 1716 to 1722. In 1747 the dilapidated tower was demolished. Between 1797 and 1807, granite slabs were also attached to the fortress walls. In 1808 another battery was built on the north-west side of the fort and the armament was increased to 104 cannons . From 1850 to 1854 the fort was renovated by the engineer IA Zakrzhetski. The island was heaped up with sand. The planned three-storey building with casemates could not be completed due to the Crimean War .

Kronschlot was followed by a whole series of fortifications in the Kronstadt fortress in the course of the 18th and 19th centuries.
