The Krummelsche Haus is a listed building in Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located in the eastern part of Wernigerode city center on the south side of Breiten Straße at the address Breite Straße 72 .

Architecture and history

The three-storey baroque half-timbered house was built in 1674. The building owner was the grain dealer Henricus Krummel , also known as Heinrich Grumel, whose name is inscribed next to Anna Borchert . Civil coats of arms are shown next to the names. In older publications, the building is also given as Frankenfeld's house with the number 408 on Breiten Straße or Krummel-Frankenfeld's or Gerlitz's house .

The upper floors protrude. The beam heads are designed with face masks shown as grimaces, the filler wood as sticks. The facade is richly decorated, the compartments below the windows of the upper floors are decorated with allegorical reliefs. On the top floor are the depictions of the continents Europe and Asia as well as the elements air and earth and on the far right the religious theme Thuet Busse . On the middle floor are the depictions, God loves the city for justice , probably with a depiction showing the city of Wernigerode, the incorruptible judge , Africa , human mortality and America . The two continents, however, were already swapped in relation to the labeling when they were originally inserted. Around 1810 a display window was installed in the middle window axis on the ground floor.

In 1875 the storage windows and a door originally located on the second floor were removed and replaced by windows. A shop in the neo-baroque style was added on the ground floor , the facade of which is based on the design of the rest of the facade. The carving work was carried out by Gustav Kuntzsch . The display window was removed. The change in the facade was criticized by the public at the time. Later owners of the house tried several times between 1906 and 1952 to sell the remarkable facade of the house, but this was prevented. Due to the strong ornamentation of the facade, which hides the half-timbered construction, it was incorrectly assumed in the past that the building was not a half-timbered house.

In the local register of monuments , the house is listed as a residential and commercial building under registration number 094 03267.
