Krzysztof Jung
Krzysztof Jung (born July 11, 1951 in Warsaw ; † October 5, 1998 there ) was a Polish performance artist, graphic artist , painter and educator .
life and work
Krzysztof Jung studied interior design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1971 to 1976 . He then worked for the Repassage gallery until it was closed in 1981 , which he managed himself from 1978 to 1979 (under the name Repassage 2 ). There he initiated his own performances and took part in performances by other artists from the gallery environment, including by Grzegorz Kowalski . In 1983 - after a stay in Paris , where he met the painter and writer Józef Czapski - he turned to painting under his influence. From 1988 he published portraits of Polish writers in the literary magazine Zeszyty Literackie , among others by Józef Czapski, Zbigniew Herbert , Konstanty Jeleński and Joseph Brodsky . In the 1990s he worked as a teacher at a Warsaw high school.
Even if Jung defended himself against the label "gay art" at the time, today he is considered a pioneer of "gay art" like Jean Cocteau , Robert Mapplethorpe , Francis Bacon and David Hockney . Like few other Polish works of art of their time, his works reflect an artist's fascination for the male body. They can be read as reflections on the mutual relationships between men who desire one another, who rebel against social oppression and who point out the not so utopian possibility of a self-determined sexual identity. At a time when the artistic representation of male bodies was an absolute taboo in Poland, Jung's pictures and performances ushered in a new era of sensitive masculinity. Krzysztof Jung died at the age of 47 as a result of an asthma attack.
