Wolfgang Theis (* 1948 in Gärtringen ) is a German film scholar and exhibition organizer .

Life

Theis first completed an apprenticeship as a cook and educator. He obtained his Abitur on a second educational path and studied sociology, psychology, journalism, theater and film studies at the Free University of Berlin . In 1984 he completed his studies with a diploma thesis on "Homosexuality in German Film" in sociology . Theis was the head of the photo archive of the Deutsche Kinemathek for many years .

As a student, he worked as a supervisor at the Berlin Museum , where he realized the Eldorado exhibition on the history and culture of homosexual women and men in Berlin with Andreas Sternweiler and Manfred Baumgardt from 1982 to 1984 . The gay museum was created in 1985 as a result of the continuation of this project .

Wolfgang Theis curated numerous exhibitions at the Schwules Museum, including the exhibition “Goodbye to Berlin? 100 Years of the Gay Movement ”as well as homages to Marlene Dietrich , Jean Genet and Rosa von Praunheim .

In 2011 he was honored with the Cross of Merit on Ribbon .
