Kshama Sawant (born October 17, 1973 in Pune , Maharashtra ) is an Indian -American politician who is particularly known for her activities and parliamentary activities for the Socialist Alternative (United States) .

Career

Sawant studied software engineering at the University of Mumbai . However, after moving to the United States to pursue her IT studies, she decided to study economics in the face of social inequality and poverty in the United States . In 2012, Sawant ran as a write-in candidate for the Washington House of Representatives and competed against incumbent President of Parliament Frank Chopp . With 29% of the vote, she lost the election, but landed a respectable success. The following year she ran for Seattle city ​​council and was elected by less than a percentage point. She made it one of her first tasks to raise the minimum wage . In May 2014, just under four months after taking office, Mayor Ed Murray announced the increase in the minimum wage to $ 15 - which Sawant described as a success of her work. She was re-elected in the following elections in 2015 and 2019.

In 2019, Sawant voted for Bernie Sanders in the course of the primaries for the 2020 US presidential election .
