Çarpanak Adası , formerly Ktouts ( Armenian Կտուց կղզի Ktuts kghzi ) is a small island in Lake Van . It is located just under a kilometer from the east bank and around 22 km northwest of the city of Van . Some Armenians lived here until 1917 , today the island is uninhabited. Until then, the island also had an Armenian Apostolic Monastery, called the Ktuts Monastery . Its ruins can still be seen today.
During the massacre of the Armenians in 1894–1896 , the island served as a place of refuge for numerous Armenian Christians persecuted by Sultan Abdülhamid II ; the situation improved little noticeably until the genocide of the Armenians from 1915 to 1917 , when the Turkish gendarmes gained access to the island and deported all the Armenian residents . The uninhabited island is now a bird refuge and nature reserve. Since 2007 the island has been accessible for tourism by ferry.
