Zwickledt Castle is located about 2.5 km east of Wernstein am Inn in Upper Austria near the state road 506 leading to Schärding .

history

Only sparse historical data is available about the castle or the open space in Zwickledt. Based on the first mention it can be assumed that it belonged to the reign of Neuburg . In 1576, Count Julius von Salm and Neuburg am Inn gave the Schlössl and the ten houses belonging to it to his administrator Leonhard Schmelzing. In the same year, Emperor Maximilian II raised Leonhard and his brother Bernhard to the nobility, and in 1645 the family was given the nobility title “von Wernstein”. The von Schmelzing family remained the owners of Zwickledt until 1852. Then the owners changed relatively quickly: On June 13, 1852, the property came to Ludwig and Rosa Völkl. They were followed by Josef Tornton in 1858, Josef and Maria Poth in 1872, Josef Klammer in 1873, Moriz Hoch in 1875, Armand Hoch in 1894, Baron Eduard von Müller-Hörnstein in 1900 and Georg Matzinger in 1905. In 1906 the castle was acquired by Alfred Kubin and Hedwig Kubin, who both stayed there until their deaths in 1948 (Hedwig) and 1959 (Alfred).

present

The castle is a simple two-story building with a small turret on the east side of the north wing (the artist's living area). The reveals of the windows are raised, the arched entrance door is set in stone. The building is surrounded by a wild and romantic garden, in which there is also a small pond, which Kubin immortalized as the “Pond of Zwickledt”. There was never a defense system.

An Alfred Kubin memorial - the Kubin House - has now been set up in the house by the State of Upper Austria. The living area is left as it was used by Kubin. A generously designed exhibition room under the roof can be used multifunctionally.
