The cube is a 2985 m high mountain in Queen Maud Land in East Antarctica . It rises 5 km southeast of the Trollslottet mountain in the northwestern part of the Filchner Mountains in the Orvinfjella .
It was discovered and descriptively named after its cubic shape during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher .
