Type : Globular heather snail
Scientific name
Helicella bolenensis
( Locard , 1882)

The Spherical heath snail ( Helicella bolenensis ) is a snail from the family of Geomitridae that the order of terrestrial snails is expected (gastropod).

features

The spherical, slightly pressed case is 6.5 to 11.5 mm high and 8 to 14 mm wide. It has 5½ to 6 curved whorls with a deep seam; the outline is straight. The open navel is narrow and takes up about one sixth of the width of the case. In the spindle area it is somewhat covered by the mouth edge that is turned over there. The last turn does not descend towards the mouth. The mouth is rounded-elliptical. The mouth edge is sharp and only slightly turned over at the base towards the spindle. A strong white lip is formed inside.

The housing is whitish or yellowish with a solid shell. The surface only shows regular, clear growth stripes. The drawing consists of weak, often interrupted, reddish bands on or slightly below the periphery. The housings can also be without a drawing.

Similar species

The Mediterranean heather snail ( Cernuella virgata ) and the spotted heather snail ( Candidula intersecta ) are coarser and more irregularly striped and shouldered or edged on the periphery. The latter cases also have a slightly weaker seam.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species is very dispersed and extends from Catalonia to southern France (Dépts. Gers , Aude , Bouches-du-Rhône and Ardèche ). The globular heather snail was also introduced to Germany. The colonies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and near Ochsenfurt (district of Würzburg, Bavaria) still exist at the moment. The colony near Ludwigshafen am Rhein described by Dietrich von der Horst has since expired (Welter Schultes).

The species prefers exposed, sandy and stony, dry grasslands. In dry phases it likes to climb up grass and herbaceous plants and stays dry.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described by Arnould Locard in 1882 as Helix bolenensis . Today it is uniformly placed under the genus Helicella .

Danger

The globular heather snail is threatened with extinction in Germany according to the Red List. The species has already become extinct again in Rhineland-Palatinate. The IUCN classifies them as data deficient .
