description
The approximately 60 meter long Kugelstein Cave I has two flat oval and south-east facing day openings , as well as a third, impassable, gap-like opening between the two large openings. The northernmost of the two entrances is in a layered joint. A corridor clearly showing water marks leads from it in a south-easterly direction, which ends after 10 meters. A breakthrough in the cave floor at the end of the passage, narrowed by rubble, humus and sand, leads to a small room below. Several small corridors branch off from this room. One of these passages starts about 1.5 meters above the ground and ends after 6 meters in the anteroom of the southern cave entrance. In the anteroom you can find ceiling plumes .
The cave floor consists largely of dark gray humus to a depth of about 15 centimeters. At a depth of 15 centimeters to 90 centimeters, yellow-brown, fine-sand deposits with limestone deposits predominate. Below that, the soil consists of yellow-brown sand. The passage from the northern entrance has a floor partially covered with cave clay.
A skeleton of a six to eight-year-old child was found in the cave, facing east. Next to the skeleton was a larger clay pot decorated with ornaments. More pottery shards were found elsewhere in the cave. In addition, numerous animal bones were found, including red deer , red fox and rodents.
