Nabil el-Khoury

Nabil Melhem el-Khoury ( Arabic نبيل الخوري; * April 5, 1941 in Mtaile , Lebanon ) is a Lebanese philosopher and professor emeritus of philosophy at the Lebanese University in Beirut . His main research interests are in the fields of Enlightenment philosophy, the Christian Orient and Christian-Islamic dialogue.

As the first non-European, he and Mario de França Miranda were awarded the Josef Ratzinger Prize for their scientific work in 2015 . Translations into Arabic, etc. a. the works of Josef Ratzinger , Goethe's Faust II and texts by Kant make him an important representative of German cultural assets in the Arab world.

Life

Nabil el-Khoury grew up as the oldest of nine children in a Christian-Druze village in the Chouf Mountains. At the age of twelve he came to the Jesuit boarding school in Ghazir as a gifted student. He then studied philosophy and theology at the Université Saint-Joseph , Beirut, a. a. with Peter Hans Kolvenbach , Father Sélim Abou and Abdo Khalifé, and graduated in philosophy in 1965 with a license. At an early age he was committed to improving the living conditions in his home village. With the support of Imam Musa al-Sadr, he established a center for medical health care.

In 1965 he began studying at the Pontificia Università Urbaniana di Roma , where Cornelio Fabro and Antonio Piolanti were among his teachers and he received a diploma in theology in 1967. He continued his studies at the universities of Tübingen and Regensburg , where he studied philosophy, theology, political science, the Christian Orient and linguistics. Ernst Bloch , Josef Simon , Josef Ratzinger and Alexander Böhlig were among the well-known teachers of his time . In 1973 he received his doctorate in Tübingen with Walter Schulz with the dissertation "The interpretation of the world at Ephraem the Syrian ".

From 1974 to 1977 he devoted himself to postdoctoral studies with Paul Ricoeur on the subject of "Problèmes d'herméneutique: l'exemple du Liban" at the Sorbonne , Paris, worked at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , Munich, with Hermann Krings , Xavier Tilliette , Walter Schulz, Hans Michael Baumgartner and Wilhelm G. Jacobs at the historical-critical Schelling edition and habilitated at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with the work "Reason and State at Hegel", which also serves as an appeal to the state that has sunk in civil war Lebanon was intended.

From 1977 el-Khoury held a chair for philosophy at the Lebanese University and numerous visiting professorships at the universities of Tübingen, Eichstätt , Mainz , Freiburg and Salzburg . He has been retired since 2005.
