description
The approximately 80 meter long Kugelstein Cave II has a relatively large entrance. A horizontal corridor leads from the entrance into the mountain after about 18 meters before it widens in a southerly direction and forms a small room. From this room, the main corridor continues for around 5 meters in a westerly direction, before turning south and after another 8 meters leads to a barren fall. Above the fall there is a 15 meter long, 6 meter wide and 5 meter high hall with sinter and stalactite decorations . In the middle of the northern wall of the hall there is a steep upward gulf , about 7 meters high . In the north of the hall is a 6-meter-long, uphill corridor covered with rubble.
The cave floor consists largely of fine yellow-brown and mica-rich sand, which is interspersed with fine gravel in the upper layers and with sintered pieces and decomposed limestone rubble in the lower layers. At a depth of around 1.3 meters, the sandy soil is broken up by a thin layer of sinter. At a depth of around 1.5 meters, the yellow-brown sand is replaced by coarser gray sand with sharp-edged debris deposits.
Several Roman fragments and coins were found in the entrance area, as well as two artifacts made of quartzite in the deeper layers . There were also numerous bone finds in the cave, about 90 percent of which came from cave bears . Other bone finds come from the woolly rhinoceros , mammoth , alpine crow and black grouse .
