The Kugelsteinhöhle III , also known as the tunnel cave , near Deutschfeistritz is 485  m above sea level. A. im Kugelstein north of the main town of Deutschfeistritz, Styria in Austria .

The Kugelstein Cave III is located on the northeast slope of the Kugelstein a little below the edge of the plateau and a little south of the Ladder Cave .

description

The approximately 36 meter long Kugelsteinhöhle III has a 9.5 meter wide and 3 meter high entrance. A spacious corridor leads from the entrance to the southwest, which turns to the northwest after 21 meters. After changing direction, the corridor narrows and drops slightly towards its end. At the end of the cave, a 3 meter deep shaft was excavated during an excavation . During excavations, two stretches to the south were exposed at the bend in the main corridor.

The cave floor consists of humus , gray sand with broken debris, fine yellowish-red sand and sandy, red-brown and rearranged Terra Rossa with broken debris and limestone rubble. In the upper humus layers numerous Latène and Roman age sherds were found and in the gray sand below some tools made of quartzite , two tools made of chert and a worked bone tip were found. There were also numerous bones found in the cave, including bones from cave and brown bears , bison , wolverines , reindeer and hamsters .
