The Kulmbacher Straße 1 building is a listed building in the Upper Franconian town of Kronach , in which the rooms of the Kronach community college are housed.

Location and description

The building complex stands on a park-like property, which is located south of the Kronach city center on the left side of the Kronach river and is enclosed in the north and west by Kulmbacher Strasse and in the east by Rodacher Strasse. Around 70 m to the north is the Bürgerspital on the right bank of the Kronach, and the Rodacher Strasse 2 building immediately to the southeast .

The listed main building, which is set back from the street in the middle of the property, is a three-storey hipped roof building with a central projection in the style of late classicism . The ground floor, which does not have a basement , was made of sandstone blocks and is partially plastered , the upper floors are made of brick with sandstone structures. In the gable on the north side there is the year 1881 and the coat of arms of the city of Kronach.

On the east side of the building, a three-story, modern extension was built between 2018 and 2020, which closes the gap between the main building and the neighboring building at Rodacher Straße 2 and extends to the property boundary with Rodacher Straße. Multi-colored vertical wooden beams are attached to the large glass fronts of the extension, which on the one hand serve as a design element and on the other act as sun protection for the rooms behind.

history

The main building, which was not yet surrounded by other buildings when it was built, was originally built as a new school building for the four-tier secondary school , founded in 1879 as the city's first higher education institution . Construction work began in October 1880 and the foundation stone was laid on March 23, 1881. The completed school building was handed over to its destination during a ceremony on October 4, 1881.

After the secondary school had moved to a newly built school building on Langen Steig in 1957, today's Kaspar-Zeuss-Gymnasium , the building at Kulmbacher Strasse 1 served as a primary school . The Kronach community college has been located in the building since 1987. Initially only the rooms on the first floor were used, since 1991 the entire building.

In the years 2018 to 2020 the building was completely renovated and expanded with a modern extension on the east side. Among other things, several bricked-up window openings in the east wall were uncovered again in the main building , which was initially completely gutted . In the future, the building complex will mainly be heated and cooled using geothermal energy , but it also has a natural gas connection to protect it against very low temperatures. Costs of 7.1 million euros were estimated for the construction measures in 2018, most of which will be covered by state subsidies and third-party grants. The administrative district of Kronach, which is responsible for the adult education center, has to raise 1.6 million euros; the share of the city that owns the building is 570,000 euros.
