Cultural Center Am Stiergraben
The cultural center Am Stiergraben is a building of the city of Neunkirchen , which houses the music school, the city library and the city gallery Am Stiergraben .
It is administered by the cultural department of the municipality of Neunkirchen and is located at Schulgasse 4.
history
The building which today houses the “Am Stiergraben” cultural center was built in 1873 as the first citizen school in the Neunkirchen district. At first it housed two middle school classes and eight elementary school classes. The gym was built as an extension in 1874.
In 1883 the school building was added and in 1896 the exterior was redesigned for the last time. The boys main school was housed here until 1975, then the special school until 1984. From 1984 it serves as the seat of the music school in Neunkirchen and the surrounding area. The former gymnasium was adapted as a contemporary space for the Neunkirchen city library. It also serves as a rehearsal room for the Neunkirchner Musikverein. By adding a second level using a wooden frame construction, space could be created for a gallery . The opening of the municipal gallery Am Stiergraben took place on April 20, 1991. Since then, exhibitions with a focus on the visual arts have been shown on a regular basis .
In 2013 the library was awarded a recognition prize at the Lower Austrian Culture Prize.
Surname
The name “Am Stiergraben” is reminiscent of the original name of this square, which used to be located just outside the city wall.
