Kunawarritji is a small settlement of aboriginal the Martu , in the Gibson Desert in Western Australia is located, about 600 kilometers east of Marble Bar , and 985 kilometers from Wiluna removed. The location is near the Canning Stock Route .

The settlement, which was established in the 1980s, was a result of the Aboriginal homeland movement that emerged in the 1970s. It was set up by a group of Martu who came from Punmu .

In 2016, 76 people lived in Kunawarritji, which has no paved road. Since the settlement was founded, a clinic, a new school, several houses, a campsite and accommodation for tourists have been built there.

On September 27, 2002, the Martu received one of the largest native titles in Australia over an area of 136,000 km². Not far from the village there is the Aboriginal Community camping area with a grocery store and a diesel / petrol filling station. The power supply is ensured by two generators with 50 kW and 100 kW, which are supplied by two tanks with 86,000 liters of fuel.

The Martu founded the Kiwirrkurra Aboriginal Corporation , which is run by a council of 12 people and the chairman. The council meets monthly and reports on economic life and the financial situation.

The Aborigines in Kunawarritji maintain their traditions, sometimes live nomadically and then live on hunting and bush food . The landscapes around the place are the subject of painting by Nora Wompi , who lives in Balgo .

In 2009 the place declared a general ban on alcohol. It was the fifteenth settlement in Western Australia to issue such a ban.
