Kungens kurva ( German the curve of the king ) is a shopping center in the municipality of Huddinge , about 15 kilometers southwest of Stockholm .
Kungens Kurva is Sweden's and Scandinavia 's largest trading center and shopping center with an annual turnover of approx. 650 million euros and approx. 15 million visitors annually (2006). The first company to establish itself here was Ikea , which opened its first department store outside of Älmhult here on June 18, 1965 . A long line of branches from many grocery, clothing, home electronics, and entertainment retail chains followed. The last provider for the time being is Media Markt , which opened its first department store in Sweden here in autumn 2006. The background to the name "Kungens Kurva" is a car accident that King Gustav V suffered here with his Cadillac V8 , model 1939. On September 28, 1946, on the way home from a hunt at Tullgarn Castle , the king's chauffeur lost control of the car on Gamla Södertäljevägen and landed in a water-filled ditch. It was said that the king "hounded" his driver. Nobody was hurt, the king got out, lit a cigarette and was soon picked up from the court. Actually a minor matter, if a reporter from the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter hadn't been on site quickly and took “sensational” pictures. A newly opened petrol station nearby was soon named "Kungens Kurva" and later this became the official name for the whole area. The royal Cadillac with the number plate A4 can be seen in the engine museum at Sparreholm Palace .
