Joe Roland

Joe Roland (actually Joseph Alfred Roland, * 17th May 1920 in New York City , New York ; † 12. October 2009 in Palm Beach County , Florida ) was an American vibraphonist of modern jazz .

Joe Roland learned to play the clarinet from 1937 to 1939 at the New York Juilliard School of Music and had his own ensembles as a clarinetist. From 1940 he also played the xylophone . From 1942 to 1946 he served in the US Army; then he began to deal with the vibraphone, worked as a freelance musician in New York and in 1951 with Oscar Pettiford . From 1951 to 1953 he was also a member of George Shearing's band . Then he had his own groups with Howard McGhee and played in Artie Shaw's ensemble Gramercy Five in 1953/54 . Then he played freelance again in New York, u. a. 1956 with Mat Mathews and Aaron Sachs . His recordings under his own name, which were made from 1950 to 1954 and in which Herbie Mann was also involved, appeared on Savoy Records ( Joltin 'Joe ).
