Art agent

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Art agents mostly work on behalf of professional artists who are represented by them exclusively or non-exclusively. The profession of art agent is often confused with the art advisor , who, however, has a neutral function on the art market .

activity

Art agents usually represent visual artists in front of the press, mediate between galleries , museums and collectors , negotiate contracts and organize art sales . As a rule, art agents work according to the budget or as employees of the artist - in contrast to the art consultant involved in commission. Often today, professional advertising or PR salespeople already take on these tasks.

Art agents can usually be found in the upscale art market and their main task is to increase the reputation and sales of art and thus increase its value .

Conversely, commissioned agents are known as art agent often by collectors such as Johann Martin von Wagner for King Ludwig I . However, this is the actual job description of the art advisor.

history

As early as the 18th century, it was customary for an artist to be represented by agents in the trade. To date, however, the job description of the art agent has not yet been fully developed. There is no specific training or license to practice this profession.
