The Courier or Courier was after the Princess Charlotte of Prussia , the second steamboat , which in Pichelsdorf at Spandau of the Scottish engineer John B. Humphreys Jr. was built. The ship was intended for trips between Hamburg and Magdeburg .

The courier was powered by a 14 hp Boulton & Watt steam engine. There was a passenger compartment for the first and second class, which offered space for 14 and 16 to 18 people respectively. There were also two dormitories for women and men and an on-board restaurant.

On April 5, 1817, the ship made its first voyage from Pichelsdorf to Hamburg. She arrived in Hamburg on April 8th and had traveled 35.5 hours. The second voyage went from Berlin to Hamburg Niederbaum and lasted from April 24th to 28th, 1817. After that, the ship was used for excursions on the Spree and Havel .
