Beginnings and construction

The construction of the first section of the Kurpfalz school center ended in 1972. On September 3, 1973, lessons for the first four classes of the grammar school began in the building of the already completed secondary school. For the first year, Fillbrunn from the Carl-Benz-Gymnasium Ladenburg was called in as acting head . At the beginning of the 1974/75 school year, Emil Meixner was appointed school director.

In the summer of 1975 construction began on the third section of the school center and the first section of the grammar school. This ended a year later. On August 14, 1976 the grammar school was inaugurated by the Schriesheim mayor Peter Riehl.

In February 1978 the Ministry of Culture approved an expansion of the grammar school to increase the number of classrooms. Construction began in 1979 and ended a year later at the beginning of the 1980/81 school year. The first graduation class ended in 1982 with an average of 2.39. At the end of the 1990s, the adjacent school sports hall was built.

In September 2006 a temporary canteen was set up in the basement. The decision to build a new canteen was made in May 2008 and began in November of the same year. The cafeteria was opened in April 2010.

Partnerships and exchanges

On September 28, 1984, the city of Schriesheim entered into a partnership with Uzès in the south of France . This marked the beginning of the annual exchange with the Lycée Charles Gide school . Since 1977 there has been an annual student exchange between the KGS and the Chesterton School in Cambridge . In addition, there has been a French exchange with the Collège Jean Zay in Brignais since 1985 . In the 90s and early 2000s there were several trips and exchanges to the USA and Hungary.

principal

The long-time director of the Kurpfalz-Gymnasium Emil Meixner retired at the end of the 1988/89 school year, his successor was Werner Rendel. In 2005 he was replaced by Matthias Nortmeyer as headmaster. Nortmeyer held this office for ten years until he also left high school in 2015. Jürgen Sollors was appointed the new director.

Redevelopment

KGS interim construction

Due to the high heating costs and poor technical equipment, the school is being renovated. The renovation is to be discussed in the local council on April 10, 2020 and basic things clarified. In order to keep the school going, the renovation is divided into 3 construction phases. The first construction phase will last until the end of 2020, phase 2 should be completed by the end of 2021, the last phase by spring 2022. The costs for the renovation should amount to a maximum of € 21.5 million, of which € 6.7 million will be added as a federal grant. Containers are set up on the teacher's parking lot as a classroom replacement, with around 4 containers forming a classroom. The first group of schoolchildren will move between December 2019 and January 2020. The main building is to be three-story, consist of 114 modules and have a floor area of 615 square meters. The adjoining building, on the other hand, is one-story and consists of only 19 containers (288 square meters). The entire IT and server area should be significantly improved in the school. The architectural office Dierks Blume Nasedy from Darmstadt is involved in the renovation .
