The Kurt-Schumacher-Haus in the Berlin district of Wedding is a listed building and the seat of the Berlin SPD regional association .

history

The five-storey building at Müllerstrasse 163 was built in 1960/1961 on behalf of Grundstücksgesellschaft Wedding GmbH, based on plans by the architect Wilhelm Nemack. With its modern design, it reflects the belief in progress of that time. During this time, as a result of the division of Berlin, several public administration buildings were built on Müllerstrasse, such as the opposite building of the North Employment Office, the new building of the Wedding Town Hall or the Center Français de Berlin . The Berlin regional association of the SPD also settled in Wedding, in the old stronghold of the workers' movement . The house was given the name of Kurt Schumacher , who was chairman of the SPD from 1945 until his death in 1952, because in his person “[...] the inextricable connection between freedom and democratic socialism, the struggle against the National Socialist as well as the Communist dictatorship and one [embodied] patriotism aimed at preserving and securing peace. "

The topping-out ceremony was in December 1960 and the move-in took place on September 1, 1961. The building was officially inaugurated on December 2, 1961.

Architecture and specialty

The reinforced concrete skeleton structure has a strictly ordered grid facade. A typical feature of post-war modernism are the asymmetrically divided windows. On the narrow side, Wilhelm Nemack created an architecturally well thought-out facade. The cantilevered meeting room on the second floor was glazed over a large area and provided with an inclined concrete frame that looks like a huge awning. The motif, which is underlined by the inclined flagpoles, is repeated on the horizontal windows on the right window axis.

use

The house is used as the administrative headquarters of the Berlin SPD. For meetings are u. a. with the Erika-Heß-Saal (→ Erika Heß ) and the Franz-Künstler-Saal (→ Franz Künstler ) modern event rooms are available. Readings and exhibitions take place regularly in the gallery in the Kurt-Schumacher-Haus. The August Bebel Institute is also located in this building. The Kurt-Schumacher-Haus was Willy Brandt's place of work for many years . The SPD chairman was the governing mayor of Berlin from 1957 to 1966 and Federal Chancellor from 1969 to 1974 .
