life and work

Kurt Fitzler, the son of the commercial chemist Johannes Fitzler (1854–1922), attended the learned school of the Johanneum (until 1903) and the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hamburg. After graduation (1904) he studied history at the universities of Jena and Leipzig . In Leipzig he concentrated particularly on ancient history.

After doctorate (1910) and state examination (1911), he worked from October 1912 as a scientific assistant teacher at the grammar school in Cuxhaven. When the First World War broke out , he volunteered for military service. He was placed on the Western Front as a deputy officer. During the first weeks of the war he died on August 21, 1914 in the Belgian city of Tienen (Tirlemont) from a shot in the stomach.

In the few years of his professional activity, Fitzler made a name for himself in several areas of ancient history. With his dissertation he presented himself as a dedicated expert on Hellenistic-Roman economic history. As a student of Ulrich Wilcken , he used papyrological sources to illuminate historical contexts. In addition to Wilcken, he was also in contact with Michael Rostovtzeff , the most important expert on ancient economic history. The dissertation was received positively in the international specialist press (including by Hugo Blümner , Carl Krug and Paul Laumonier ) and for a long time remained the starting point for dealing with the economic history of Greco-Roman Egypt.

After his dissertation, Fitzler wrote journal articles, reviews and articles for the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity .
