Kurt Stettler (soccer player)

Kurt Stettler (born August 21, 1932 in Stettlen ) is a former Swiss national football player. Stettler worked as a regular goalkeeper at FC Basel for around eight years . During his time, the national team at the World Cup in Chile in 1962 and the 1963 cup victory with FC Basel also fell.

Kurt Stettler was born in 1932 in his "namesake village " Stettlen in Worbental near Bern.

Kurt Stettler made his first attempts at football with the Young Boys' student teams .

During his apprenticeship as a baker-confectioner he worked with the juniors of Ostermundigen .

After a detour to Ticino , where he was a reserve goalkeeper at FC Lugano in the shadow of the famous Corrodi, he moved to FC Bern . There he was often used next to Pelozzi in the Fanion team .

After the relegation of the Bernese Stettler went to FC Luzern , where he promised better prospects. Despite repeated relegation, he remained loyal to the people of Leuchtenstadt.

Even then, his trademarks were good jumping ability, safe positional play and courageous running out.

Participation in the World Cup in Chile in 1962

At that time he had not won a national title, but due to his consistently good performances he was nominated for the World Cup in Chile, together with Charly Elsener and Antonio Pernumian. Kurt Stettler was almost 30 years old at the time.

Change to FC Basel

When Kurt Stettler moved to FC Basel , the Basler were considered an up-and-coming NLA club in Switzerland. With the exception of the championship title in 1953, FC Basel had always lacked a bit of luck to win a big title.

In the spring of 1963 the Basler were able to qualify for the Cup final in a thrilling semi-final against Lausanne-Sports in front of 18,000 spectators.

Kurt Stettler had his big day on this important match, as he was able to defend the goal in dire need thanks to his commitment and the tireless parades to the left and right.

On Easter Monday 1963 it was the Grasshoppers who faced FC Basel and who had to be defeated.

After an even game that was on a knife's edge for a long time, the Basler team, supported by an incredible number of fans, made it 1-0 through Heinz Blumer.

After a free kick by Hans Weber, Otto Ludwig was able to use the ball and scored the 2-0.
