Kurt Weitauer
Kurt Weitauer (born February 3, 1936 ; † July 29, 2017 ) was a German football player who worked for Hamborn 07 for many years and later also worked there as a coach.
Career as a player
Weitauer lived in a mining settlement in Duisburg in the immediate post-war period and joined the youth team of the Hamborn 07 football club in 1946. Basically, this sport was his main leisure activity, where he played under very simple conditions. The Hamborner were at that time next to the Duisburger Spielverein and Meidericher SV to the best clubs in their city and competed in either the Oberliga West or the 2nd League West ; In the then regional league system, the league represented the top division. In the summer of 1954, at the age of 18, he moved up to the first team, in which many young players were given a chance at that time.
Over the following years he remained part of the Hamborner team, with which he was promoted to the Oberliga West at the end of the 1954/55 season as runner-up in the 2nd League West. Under coach Elek Schwartz , he came to 24 league appearances in this round, in which he scored ten goals. This was followed by a change of league between first and second class every year before the team was able to establish themselves in the top division from 1959. When the Hamborner "Löwen" took 12th place in 1959/60, Weitauer was only in one league game next to goalkeeper Horst Podlasly (30-0), defender Rolf Schafstall (30-0) and top scorer Horst Jesih (30-17) in action under trainer Fred Harthaus . When Hamborn even distanced local rivals Meidericher SV in the 1960/61 season, he was no longer represented as an active player in the league. Unlike the "Zebras", however, Hamborn missed qualification for the Bundesliga , founded in 1963 , which went hand in hand with the abolition of the Oberliga. Hamborn thus belonged to the Regional League West, which was introduced as a substructure for the Bundesliga . Weitauer was there in the premiere year before his time as a player of the "Löwen" ended in 1964. From a total of 18 years since his youth, he had been a member of the first team for ten seasons.
Further work in football
After the end of his playing career, he returned to Hamborn 07 as a coach. He occupied this office in the 1970s, in which the club was initially still second class and over time sank into lower class football. When Günter Preuss took over the coaching position in 1979 , he stood by the club as a technical advisor. He also held the managerial post from time to time. However, he was also active outside of Hamborn, for example by assisting VfB Lohberg as a coach in the late 1980s .
Until the early 21st century Hamborn had not been able to return to the national leagues, whereas Weitauer retained a high level of recognition at his previous club regardless of a certain post and is considered a "veteran" there. Despite the sporting crash, he remained connected to the club. His grandson Torben Wissen (* 1989) began his career just like Weitauer with the “Löwen” and in 2015 he joined the club, which now only plays in the seventh-class district league.
