Kurt von Wessely

Kurt von Wessely (* around 1881; † October 25, 1917 in Vienna ; also Curt von Wessely ) was an Austro-Hungarian tennis player .

Life

Von Wessely, who came from Prague , took part in tennis tournaments from 1899 to 1914. In 1904 he reached the final of the Austrian championships, but lost there to Josiah Ritchie . In the same year he was able to win the tournament in Prague. In 1905 he played in the Davis Cup , but could not win any of his three matches in the encounter with the team from Australiasia ( Australia and New Zealand ). Besides Rolf Kinzl, von Wessely was the first Austrian to take part in the Wimbledon tournament , but he never got past the second round there. In 1909 he became the first local to win the international Austrian championships. Together with Kinzl, von Wessely also took part in the 1908 Olympic Games in London and four years later in Stockholm .

In addition to tennis, von Wessely operated numerous other sports, including soccer , field and ice hockey, and skiing .

After the outbreak of World War I he was drafted as a cavalry lieutenant. After a year and a half, he was shot in the arm that made him unfit for military service. He died in Vienna in 1917 at the age of 36 as a result of a thrombosis caused by the injury .
