Kushok Bakula

Kushok Bakula (born May 21, 1917 , † November 4, 2003 , also Bakula Rinpoche or Kushok Bakula Rinpoche ) was the religious leader of the Pethup Gonpa in Spituk , Ladakh , India. He was also a member of the Indian Parliament and a lama . In 1999 he founded the "Bakula Rinpoche Süm" monastery in Ulaanbaatar , Mongolia. In 2005, Leh Airport , India was renamed "Kushok Bakula Airport" in his honor .

Kushok was considered the 19th incarnation of Bakula, one of the 16 arhats of Buddha Shakyamuni. Kushok Bakula Rinpoche has helped revive Buddhism in Mongolia and Russia . From 1990 to 1999 he was the Indian ambassador to Mongolia. He campaigned for the rights of minorities.

In 1986 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan .

Thubstan Nawang, born on November 24th, 2005 is the 20th Bakula Rinpoche. He was enthroned on August 12, 2010 in Pethub Gompa, Spituk, Ladakh, India.
