Kusumba Mosque

Kusumba Mosque ( Bengali কুসুম্বা মসজিদ Kusumbā Masjid ) is a historic mosque in Bangladesh in Upazila Manda in the Naogaon district . It was built from 1558 to 1559.

geography

The mosque is located on the west bank of the Atrai River , on an artificial basin in the Upazila Manda area. South of the basin, the Kusumba Mosque Road leads from the Rajshahi-Naogaon Highway ( R 685 ) to the mosque. There are numerous other ponds and rice fields in the vicinity.

architecture

The mosque is located within a walled area with a monumental gate in which there are also places for guards. The inscription is entirely in Arabic , except for the phrase "built by". This is written in Persian . The foundation and most of the building are made of bricks. Only some exterior and interior walls and pillars are made of stone. Six domes support the roof. The building is 17.67 m long and 12.8 m wide.

The central mihrab is on the west side. Opposite the central and the southeast entrance there are two more mihrabs on the inner walls in the west. In this way there is a division between the two mihrabs. At the time of the building there was evidently a demarcation between the common people and the officials and nobles.

history

The Kusumba Mosque is named after the village of Kusumba. It was during the period of Afghan rule built in Bengal, at the time of Suri -Herrschers Ghiyasuddin Bahadur Shah . A high official by the name of Sulaiman had the building built. The architecture is nevertheless not influenced by the earlier Suri architecture in North India , but shows elements of the Bengali style . At the main entrance in the east, an inscription describes the construction period from 966 after the Hijra (1558–59 AD). The stone walls have a blackish color, to which the popular name of the mosque as Kala Ratna (German: "Black Gem") refers.

Conservation and Protection

The mosque was badly damaged in the 1987 earthquake. It is a listed building and is looked after by the Department of Archeology of Bangladesh .
