Shilaidaha Kuthibadi ( Bengali শিলাইদহ ) is a place in Kumarkhali Upazila County of Kushtia District in Bangladesh . In the village is the Kuthi Bari , a country house of Dwarkanath Tagore , the grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore . Rabindranath Tagore lived there for a while and wrote some of his poems there.

Shelaidaha Kuthi Bari

In 1890, Tagore began managing the family properties in Shelaidaha. He spent a decade there at irregular intervals between 1891 and 1901. The country house was built by his father Maharshi Debendranath Tagore . The property was later bought by the bank as there was a bank debt. The building was auctioned and became the property of the Roy family of Bhagyakul (Munshiganj) in Zamindar . The house was part of the family estate until the Zamindari system was repealed by the East Bengal State Acquisition and Tenancy Act of 1950. Syed Murtaza Ali , the then Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi , took the initiative in 1958 to preserve the neglected house. During the renovation, however, the wall color of the house was changed and the house was painted red so that it resembles similar houses in Zamindars in the district.

architecture

The house has three floors, a brick and wood building and the roof is covered with zinc plates. The building has a pyramid shape and stands on a raised terrace. the entire property is 11 acres (4,45 hectares).

museum

The renovation of Kuthi Bari was commissioned by the Department of Archeology, Ministry of Cultural Affairs . The house now serves as a museum ( Tagore Memorial Museum ), in which many everyday objects of Tagore are exhibited, including his Budgerow (houseboat barque ).

literature

During his stay, Rabindranath Tagore wrote numerous famous poems, essays and short stories. These include: Sonar Tari , Katha o Kahini , Chitra , Chaitali and numerous pieces from Naibedya, Kheya , Gitanjali and Geetimalya . Translations into English were also made there. For Gitanjali he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 .

Festivals

During the year, several festive days are specially celebrated, including the 25th Baishakh as Tagore's birthday. A five-day festival will be held.
