Kuthalam ( Tamil : குத்தாலம் Kuttalam [ kut̪ːaːlʌm ] or குற்றாலம் Kuṟṟālam [ kutːraːlʌm ]) is a town in the district of Nagapattinam of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 16,000 (2011 census). The city's name is also spelled Kuttalam or Kutralam . Kuthalam should not be confused with the city of Courtallam in southern Tamil Nadu , which can also be spelled Kuttalam or Kutralam .

Kuthalam is located in the eastern Kaveri Delta on the banks of the main Kaveri arm. The next largest cities are Mayiladuthurai 11 kilometers east and Kumbakonam 24 kilometers west. The distance to Chennai , the capital of Tamil Nadu, is 280 kilometers. State Highway 22 from Mayiladuthurai to Kumbakonam and the railway line from Chennai to Thanjavur run through Kuthalam . Administratively, Kuthalam belongs to the Nagapattinam district and is the capital of the Taluk Kuthalam .

Kuthalam is home to an important Hindu temple, the Uthavedeeswarar temple. He is dedicated to the god Shiva . Kuthalam was already in the 7./8. Century sung under the name Tirutturutti in the Tevaram hymns of the poet saints Appar and Sambandar . This makes it one of the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ).

85 percent of the population of Kuthalam are Hindus , 13 percent Muslim and 1 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 99 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
