Kutiman (2011)

Kutiman (* 1981 , real name Ophir Kutiel ) is an Israeli musician, composer and producer. He was best known for his online music video project ThruYOU .

biography

Kutiel grew up in Zichron Ya'akov in northern Israel. He has been playing the piano since he was seven , with guitar and drums added at 14 . Kutiel studied at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Ramat hascharon near Tel Aviv . Through his friend DJ Sabbo he came into contact with styles such as funk and afrobeat .

His stage name is mainly based on his nickname Kuti , with Fela Kuti being one of his role models.

music

Kutiman was signed to the Cologne independent label Melting Pot Music in 2006. His debut album Kutiman was rated 8.2 out of 10 by Pitchfork Media .

ThruYOU

Kutiman became better known through his online music video project ThruYOU (in German by you ), which he published in early 2009. Kutiman composed seven new songs ( mashups ) exclusively from numerous excerpts from YouTube videos . Within a short period of time, the project gained wide recognition, among other things through mentions in blogs .

Spiegel Online describes ThruYOU as “virtuoso” and means that it marks “a new level in the post-modern game with images and sounds found on the Internet”. the daily newspaper sees it as a "high quality, almost post-modern homage to YouTube, to free creation, musical work and the children of the digital 21st century".
