Kwon Yeo-sun (* 1965 in Andong , Kyŏngsang-pukdo ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Kwon Yeo-sun made her debut in 1996 with her novel The Green Rift (푸르른 틈새), which was awarded the Sangsang Literature Prize. At the time, novels reflecting the time of the democracy movements in Korea were popular. The Green Rift was originally thought to be just one of many of those retrospective novels, but it turned out to be one of the most prominent evolutionary novels in the Korean literary world of the 1990s .

Despite her memorable debut, Kwon did not actively pursue her writing career in the years that followed. It was only eight years after the publication of Der Grüne Spalt that she published a collection of short stories entitled Mädchenrock (처녀 치마). This book, which Kwon claims feels like publishing a love letter to yourself, is about dejected individuals who, despite their tragic fate, reach a place of resigned acceptance. The characters in this volume are generally people who are burdened because of their relationships not accepted by society, such as B. Extra-marital and homosexual relationships. Unable to overcome this handicap, the characters watch their love collapse.

In her second collection of short stories, The Days of the Pink Ribbon (분홍 리본 의 시절), the characters are also for the most part people who have failed rather than succeeded. They are mostly people with flaws in their personality or physique. It seems as if the characters in Kwon's works fail not for external reasons, but as a result of their own shortcomings or fate.

Disappointment and failure that haunt a person can be caused by hidden trauma within the individual or by self-hatred. When readers encounter these characters in Kwon's stories, they tend to feel insecure as they discover negative energies and hatred within themselves.

The short story Believe in Love (사랑 을 믿다), which was awarded the Yi Sang Literature Prize, follows the failure of a relationship between a man and a woman. The story makes the reader feel uncomfortable as a reminder of how the path of love is riddled with mistakes. Kwon is one of the most prolific and respected contemporary writers.
