The Kronenburg dam , also popularly known as the Kronenburger See , was built between 1973 and 1979 as a flood retention basin to protect against the floods of the Kyll and Taubkyll rivers and put into operation in 1976.
The approximately 27 hectares and m high with a 19 and 325 m long dam from earth ground provided storage system is a nationwide transnational dam ; in the west, a small part of it belongs to Hallschlag in the north of the Gerolstein association in the extreme northwest of Rhineland-Palatinate , but predominantly extends over the area of Kronenburg in the south of the municipality of Dahlem in the Euskirchen district in the extreme southwest of North Rhine-Westphalia . It is operated by the Kronenburger See association.
The dam is a popular local recreation area and excursion destination for holiday guests with water sports for sailors, surfers, rowers, anglers and swimmers. A large leisure facility on the southern shore of the lake offers various games, sports and leisure opportunities. There is a park with 160 bungalows, a bathing establishment with a large lawn for sunbathing, a sailing and surfing school, boat rental, tennis courts, a bowling green, a mini golf course, barbecue huts, children's playgrounds, a kiosk and a cafeteria. Since 2010, the SRV Kronenburg See rowing club has been located on its eastern bank , which primarily promotes rowing for young people . The Kronenburger See holiday park also operates an indoor swimming pool. An approximately 2.7 km long circular path opens up the dam for walkers. In summer, a water rope course, a climbing rock and a trampoline are available for bathers in the dam, not far from the shore.
In August 2016, the dam was completely drained in order to completely rehabilitate the dam.
Behavior in and around the lake
In terms of its function, the dam is a rainwater retention basin. This means that in winter a winter damming is practiced, for which a large part of the water is drained. The water level then drops by around 5 to 6 m compared to the water level in summer. When snowmelt and heavy rain, the water level can rise rapidly. Diving is not allowed in the dam. Ice skating is also prohibited.
