The Church of St. Cyril and Methodius

The Church of St. Cyril and Methodius ( Slovenian : Cerkev sv. Cirila in Metoda and Serbian : Црква Светих Ћирила и Методија or Crkva Svetih Ćirila i Metodija) is the only Serbian Orthodox church in the Slovenian capital Ljjana . It is the most important Serbian Orthodox church building in all of Slovenia.

The church, named after St. “Slav apostles” Cyril and Methodius , is located near the Museum of Modern Art and the Slovenian National Gallery on the corner of Tivoli and Prešeren streets. The church belongs to the Zagreb- Ljubljana Metropolitan Region of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The church, built in 1936, was designed by the architect Momir Korunović . It has five domes, which are crowned with gold crosses. The interior is completely painted with frescoes by Dragomir Jašović and Mišo Mladenović . The iconostasis was made by Mirko Šubic in 1940. Christ Pantocrator looks down from the dome ceiling , while the apostles are in the niches.

It was not until 2005 that the church was consecrated and officially opened by the Serbian Patriarch Pavle . The Slovenian President Janez Drnovšek and the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Alojz Uran were also present . Tomáš Špidlík brought some relics of St. Athanasius from the Vatican to show the solidarity of the Roman and Orthodox Churches.

Since April 10, 2010 the church has been a cultural monument of regional importance .
