The Läsekenburg is an Outbound hilltop castle in southern Sackwald in Hildesheim in Lower Saxony .

Location and description

The remains of the castle are about 800 meters southeast of the Hohe Schanze on a narrow ridge at 220 meters above sea level. To protect the castle complex, the ridge to the north was cut off by three transverse trenches . In the south there was a bailey .

Carl Schuchhardt carried out excavations on the castle site in 1895. On the basis of one meter thick wall foundations, he demonstrated a rectangular main castle . It was 130 meters long and 25 meters wide. This means that the system is precisely adapted to the narrow terrain. In the south-east were the foundations of a round tower with 1.2 meter thick walls and an interior two meters in diameter. The masonry was preserved up to a meter high and covered with burnt clay. This suggests that the top of the tower was made of wood and clay and was destroyed in a fire. The tower was probably the keep . Ceramic remains that allow a dating of the complex were not found.

The castle is historically mentioned in files in 1578 as Liesickenburg , which is popularly known as Lieschenburg . Schuchhardt saw it as a small mansion from the Middle Ages . There are assumptions that the owners of Hausfreden Castle , which was destroyed in 1402 , then built the Läsekenburg for themselves.
