Léger Marie Deschamps ( Benedictine name: Dom Deschamps; born January 10, 1716 in Rennes , † April 19, 1774 Montreuil-Bellay ) was a French utopian and philosopher. Deschamps anonymously published two books in which he designed an atheistic utopia free from property and oppression .

Live and act

He entered a Benedictine order in Rennes and made his vows on September 8, 1733. Although he was heterodox in his views on the interpretation of faith , he always remained connected to religious activity in monastic life.

He went to a monastery in Montreuil-Bellay with Samur where he later assumed the office of procurator . He later made the acquaintance of Marc-Pierre d'Argenson , who sponsored him from 1760 and was on friendly terms. Through him he got in contact with Voltaire and several other encyclopedists . Deschamps corresponded u. a. with Rousseau , Helvétius , d'Alembert and Voltaire . He met Denis Diderot personally when he was working on his D'Alembert's dream , Le rêve de D'Alembert (1769); he named Marie Deschamps as a "moine athée" atheist monk.

He died in 1774 in the Montreuil-Bellay monastery.
