Léon Benouville (painter)
François-Léon Benouville (born March 30, 1821 in Paris , † February 16, 1859 there ) was a French painter .
Léon Benouville first studied together with his brother Jean-Achille Benouville (1815-1891) under François-Édouard Picot , before moving to the École des Beaux-Arts in 1837 . A year later he made his debut at the Paris Salon . Like his brother, he received the Prix de Rome in 1845 . His works from Rome are influenced by early Christianity and often show depictions of antiquity.
Many of his paintings and drawings are in the Louvre , others in the Musée d'Orsay , the Musée des beaux-arts in Pau , the Musée de Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse and the Musée Fabre , Montpellier.
Up to $ 38,000 is paid for his oil paintings in the art market today.
