Life

Léon Carré was a classmate of Mathurin Méheut at the École des beaux-arts in Rennes . At the age of 19 he left Brittany with the trained profession of decorator and studied in Paris at the École des beaux-arts with Léon Bonnat and Luc-Olivier Merson . In 1900 he exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français ; 1905 at the Salon des Independants ; 1907 at the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts and in 1911 at the Société du Salon d'Automne .

Carré began his artistic career with scenes from Paris street life. He traveled to Algiers for the first time in 1904 and a second time in 1905. One of his first orientalist works, the “Arab Market Place”, brought him the Paul Chenavard Prize, 2nd class, in 1905. He was later awarded again in the Chenavard competition.

Léon Carré and his friend Jules Mignonney received a two-year scholarship in 1909 at the Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers, which had been founded two years earlier by Governor Charles Jonnart for artists from France. After marrying the painter Anne Marie Lederer , known as “Ketty”, (1882–1964) in 1909, the couple moved into a villa in Abd-el-Tif, a district in which some orientalist artists were already based. During this time Carré drew many drawings of oriental scenes. Carré spent most of 1911 in Spain, where he developed his enthusiasm for bullfighting scenes.

After the First World War , Carré designed tourist posters and postage stamps for the Bank of Algeria, one of his works, “The ruins of El Djem amphitheater in Tunisia”, was written on the 50-franc banknote of the Bank of Algeria in 1942. In 1927 he contributed to the decoration of the " Île-de-France " liner . Eré created illustrations for the book " A Thousand and One Nights " translated by Joseph-Charles Mardrus in twelve volumes (1926–1932).

Léon Carré was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1936 . He died on December 2, 1942 in Algiers in his studio on Rue Dumont-d'Urville, where he had lived since the war .
