Léon Gromier (born May 20, 1879 in Montchanin , Saône-et-Loire department , † April 19, 1965 in Rome ) was a French Roman Catholic priest and rubricist .

Life

Gromier prepared from 1898 to 1902 in the Pontifical Seminary Gallicum in Urbe (Gallicum) in Rome for the priesthood before and received on 29 March 1902, the priestly ordination . He continued his education at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy and initially worked as a priest at the Church of Santa Maria in Montesanto on the Roman Piazza del Popolo .

On March 26, 1914, Gromier was appointed consultor of the Papal Congregation for Rites. He was also a member of the Academia Pontificia Liturgica , which had to solve practical questions of the worship service. At times he worked as a censor, ie assessor of the proposed solutions by members of the Academia. In 1920 he became papal secret chamberlain , in 1925 house prelate of His Holiness , in 1926 canon of St. Peter in the Vatican and Protonotarius Apostolicus supra numerum .

Léon Gromier is considered to be the informant of the writer Roger Peyrefitte for Vatican internals, which he describes in Les Clés de saint-Pierre ("The Keys of Saint Peter"). Peyrefitte characterizes him as strict, deeply religious and of an impeccable way of life. Gromier's writings testify to a brilliant knowledge of given liturgical prescriptions (and their contradictions) as well as a disdain for the liturgical renewal under Pope Pius XII.
