Léopold-Émile Reutlinger (born March 17, 1863 in Callao (Peru), † March 16, 1937 in Paris ) was a French photographer who came from a successful German-Jewish family of photographers. His uncle and the founder of the success was the photographer Charles Reutlinger , his father the photographer Émile Reutlinger . Léopold-Émiles son Jean was also a photographer.

Life

Like his uncle and father, Léopold-Émile Reutlinger also became a photographer. He lived in Callao until 1883 and then, at his father's insistence, entered the studio in Paris, which his father had been running alone since 1880. Léopold-Émile took over the studio from his father after 1890. Like his uncle, he took photos of popular actresses and opera singers from the start. Soon he was also making fashion and advertising photos and photographing stars of entertainment venues such as the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergère . The photos were either sold to magazines and newspapers or reproduced as postcards. The business with pictures in picture postcard format , which were often clearly influenced by Art Nouveau, was particularly successful. The pictures were partially colored and designed as photo montages . At 40, Léopold-Émile Reutlinger had an excellent reputation. He clearly trumped his uncle's success. Reutlinger was also one of the pioneers of erotic photography. He recorded Mata Hari , Cléo de Mérode , Sarah Bernhardt , Léonie Yahne , Anna Held and Lina Cavalieri , among others .

His son Jean was born in 1891 and had worked with his father as a photographer since 1910. Because of the First World War Jean was called up and died at the beginning of the war in 1914. In 1930 Léopold-Émile Reutlinger suffered an eye injury from a champagne cork, which cost him the sight of one eye and seriously impaired his job. But he continued to run the studio until his death in 1937.
