Léopold Gottlieb
Leopold Gottlieb (born June 3, 1879 in Drohobycz , Austria-Hungary ; died April 24, 1934 in Paris ) was a Polish painter.
Life
Leopold Gottlieb was a brother of the painters Maurycy Gottlieb (1856–1879) and Marcin Gottlieb (1867–1931). From 1896 to 1902 he studied at the Cracow Art Academy with Jacek Malczewski , Józef Unierzyski and Teodor Axentowicz . In Munich he had lessons with Anton Ažbe and was briefly in Paris in 1904. He then went back to Krakow, became a member of the Hagenbund in Vienna , and taught at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem in 1906 . In 1908 he was back in Paris and traveled to Spain in 1913/14. During the First World War he served as a war painter in the 1st Brigade of the Polish Legions and made a thousand portraits of soldiers.
Around 1926 he settled permanently in Paris, where he was associated with Polish artists and belonged to the Société des Artistes Indépendants . In 1929 he joined the Rytm Polish Artists' Association .
