Malthouse of the former Löwen Brewery in Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen

The Löwenbrauerei was a brewery opened at the end of the 19th century in the Berlin district of Alt-Hohenschönhausen . They stopped making beer in the late 1990s.

history

founding

The Löwenbrauerei was founded at the suggestion of the landowner Gerhard Puchmüller in 1889 as the limited partnership Brauhaus Hohenschönhausen in 1892 in Hohenschönhausen. The brewery facilities were built on the Berliner Strasse (today Konrad-Wolf-Strasse ) / Oberseestrasse / Degnerstrasse area until production began in 1894 . The last building to be completed was the malt house, designed by the architect G. Lüdicke. From 1903 the company was renamed Löwenbrauerei AG Hohenschönhausen . In 1907 the family of the brewery owner had the architect C. Eisele add a three-story villa at Berliner Straße 14. In 1908 the former Westphalsche brewery in Zossen and the customers of the Stieber & Stimming brewery in Fürstenwalde-Ketschendorf were taken over. In 1912 the export beer brewery in Ketzin was taken over. In 1922, as part of the merger with Böhmische Brauhaus AG, Friedrichshain, the company was renamed Löwenbrauerei-Böhmisches Brauhaus AG Section II . The brewery last took over the Berliner Bergschloßbrauerei AG in 1927.

The project of obtaining process water from the brewery by filling in some of the sinks leading to today's Obersee is remarkable . In winter, blocks of ice were also extracted from the frozen lake for transport cooling. Ultimately, this newly created lake contributed significantly to the upgrading of the district and also to the establishment of the villa district on Lake Orankesee .

The delivery of the brewing ingredients and the dispatch of the products probably took place mainly by rail, as the Tegel – Friedrichsfelde industrial line ran directly north of the brewery site and the Hohenschönhausen freight station there was not far from the brewery.

A specialty of the Löwenbrauerei was the Potsdamer stangenbier .

The Löwenbrauerei also included the Storchenhof ballroom , where the first confrontations between Communists and National Socialists in the 1930s , on the occasion of a speech by Joseph Goebbels , led to a battle in the Storchennest restaurant . Today the Storchenhof shopping center , playgrounds and green spaces are located here.

post war period

Production did not resume after the Second World War . The GDR shut down operations in 1950. The Mälzereigebäude served from 1952 as a warehouse and grain distillery later VEB BärenSiegel . Up until 1988, the grain distillery produced high-percentage alcohol as a preliminary product for the production of spirits and alcohol rectified as technical alcohol for the needs of the GDR. After production restrictions due to fire protection, operations were closed in 1989. A subsequent use by the VEB Bärensiegel was only given up in 1991.

In 1978 the parts of the business in West Berlin that had previously been taken over from the Löwenbrauerei-Böhmisches Brauhaus by the Schultheiss-Brauerei were shut down.

The villa at Konrad-Wolf-Straße 14 has been completely preserved from the entire brewery. This is under monument protection and expires (see picture of facade detail). Large parts of the malting building were extensively renovated in the 1990s by the housing association , expanded with a modern new building and could thus be rented to the Caritas Association . He uses the house as a St. Albertus retirement home for around 120 people.
