The Obersee is a body of water in the Berlin district of Alt-Hohenschönhausen . Together with Lake Orankesee, it forms the core of the Hohenschönhauser villa district on Lake Orankesee . The name of the artificially created body of water comes from the fact that the water level of the lake is around 1.50 meters higher than that of its neighbor.

Emergence

The Obersee was created in 1895 as a water reservoir and ice supplier for the Löwenbrauerei AG located on Konrad-Wolf-Straße (then Berliner Straße) . No earthworks had to be carried out for the lake as the filled area was previously a natural depression. In it were the Erftpfuhl and the Lindenwerderlake. Hohenschönhausen's second villa colony was built around the area at the beginning of the 20th century, and the lake has been completely enclosed by buildings since the 1960s.

Water tower

History of the water tower

Water tower

A water tower has shaped the area of the Obersee since 1900 . This is located on the Lindwerderberg, at 61 m above sea level. NN the highest natural elevation of Alt-Hohenschönhausen. The water tower was used to supply the brewery and later the villa colony at Obersee and Orankesee. On the brick tower shaft sat an iron container of a design developed by the engineer Otto Intze , of which an estimated 500 copies existed in the German Empire . The construction work was carried out by the company Merten & Knauff. With the Greater Berlin Act , the place was incorporated into Berlin and connected to the water supply of Lichtenberg . In 1922, when the Löwen brewery was taken over by the Böhmisches Brauhaus AG brewery and brewing operations were stopped, the tower and the associated waterworks were shut down. A short time later, the request arose to demolish the tower or at least remove the container, as this would disrupt the landscape - it was finally dismantled and scrapped in 1933. During the Second World War , the tower shaft served as an anti-aircraft position . During the times of the GDR it was used as a radio station for the Society for Sport and Technology . In 2004 the tower , which had been vacant since the political change, found a new owner. Despite its structural changes, it is a listed building .

Current usage

There is an apartment and a bar in the water tower. The bar occupies the lower floors and opened in July 2007. The roof of the former pumping station was converted into a lake terrace that is used for gastronomy in summer. At night, the ledge at the top of the tower is illuminated with a green light ring indicating that the bar is open.

Oberseepark

Sculpture “Die Sonnenanbeterin” by Eberhard Bachmann

Between 1912 and 1913, the Oberseepark was built on the site between Obersee and the adjacent Waldowstrasse , and the garden architect Otto Werner was commissioned to design it. Due to the First World War , the work had to be interrupted for the time being, the park was not completed until 1920. In order to honor the 164 Hohenschönhausen soldiers who fell in World War I, the plans were changed and a hero memorial stone was added in an honorary grove.

Compared to 1920, there are significant differences in the system in the 2010s. At that time the visitor entered the park through a small pavilion. The network of paths that runs through the park was much more dense. In addition, most of the paths led to the honor grove in the southeast of the park. Both the pavilion and the memorial were destroyed in World War II. From mid-1945 the Soviet military administration in Berlin declared the area a restricted area because they had occupied villas for some high-ranking Soviet military. The area was not open to the public until the end of the 1950s, when the occupiers were given other housing.

In the 5.5  hectares of parkland, the then district administration was in the 1970s Art Steinfigur The Sonnenanbeterin the sculptor Eberhard Bachmann and a bronze sculpture summer created in 1979 by, Siegfried crepe , up. At the beginning of February 2013 the sculpture Summer was stolen, presumably by metal thieves. On April 2, 2015, a new sculpture was unveiled on the previously empty plinth: The sculpture Elegy by Belarusian artist Evgenia Usimova depicts a dreamy-looking, mermaid-like lady and was sponsored by the Obersee & Orankesee e. V. donated. The figure alludes to the legend of the neighboring Orankesee , it is made of concrete (according to the friends' association). However, a visitor to the lake can determine by tapping that the figure is hollow and sounds like tin. A coat of paint creates a marble-like appearance.

In 1996/1997 the administration of the Hohenschönhausen district had the park renovated. You can also walk around the lake, but the path on the north bank is difficult and sometimes narrow. In 2016, a new water filter system was installed in Oberseestrasse, which renatured the lake and greatly improved the water quality, but it only ran for a few weeks and then failed. The repair work in spring 2017 led to additional expenses from the district budget of 30,620  euros .

The Mies van der Rohe house is also located directly on the lake . It is the last residential building in Germany designed by the renowned architect . The building is located on the north side of the lake at Oberseestraße 60 and has been used as an art museum for several years. In the same street there are other worth seeing houses that were built here between 1909 and 1938. All villas mentioned are included in the Berlin list of monuments.
