The Orankesee is an inflow and outflow-free body of water in the Berlin district of Alt-Hohenschönhausen . Together with the Obersee, it forms the core around which the Hohenschönhauser villa district has grown. The Orankesee, just like the Faule See , the Malchower See or the Weisse See, is part of an Ice Age chain of lakes that stretches from the upper Barnim to the Berlin glacial valley. The name Oranke comes from the Slavic word Roderanke , which means something like red-brown lake.

History of the lake and the surrounding park

First development and first greening

The Orankesee was first mentioned in a document from the 14th century. However, the area around Lake Orankesee was only developed with the parceling from 1892, when the first villa colony of the manor district was built south of the lake. In 1913 the municipal council decided to create a public park around the lake. Immediately by the lake, there was an ice factory that supplied the surrounding restaurants and grocery stores with natural ice. In 1926 the Eiswerk sold the building including the lake to the city of Berlin. Almost at the same time, the landscaping of the lake area began, for example through the creation of an approximately 1.3 km long riverside path.

Orankesee lido

Restaurant and lido are built

The Weißensee theater director Wilhelm Heiden-Heinrich had a lido built on the lake in 1929 and at the same time had the brewery inn from 1892 converted into a new inn. For the lido Orankesee with a 300 m long beach, building sand from Alexanderplatz was used, which had accumulated during the construction of the Peter Behrens building. In the realm of skilful marketing , on the other hand, belongs the statement that Baltic sand was brought from Ahlbeck for the beach . A short time after the opening of the lido, on Sunday July 23, 1929, 12,000 visitors were already counted here. The terraces on Lake Orankesee with a beer cellar, large and small hall and two open-air terraces offered space for 5,000 people and were also used for concerts or dance evenings. The inn offered its services until around 1942, after which it was probably used by the Wehrmacht . Bombardments in January and June 1944 led to the complete destruction of the lido.

Lake and park after 1945

After the end of the Second World War , the Soviet military administration declared the lake and the surrounding area to be a restricted area, as the apartments of the Soviet commanders of the Hohenschönhausen district and later individual members of the MfS were located here. It was not until 1957 that the security fences were removed and the outdoor pool reopened after renovation. The terraces on Lake Orankesee were also made accessible to the public again, when the HO acted as operator .

After the fall of the Wall , the small restaurant became the property of what was then the Hohenschönhausen district, but only operated until 1993. Then the pub was closed and the land had to be sold because the ex-HO property management made financial demands. As the new owner, the company TUK Gebr. 1996 was to receive a heritable building right contract for 50 years, as it already had experience with similar facilities in Tegel and Rixdorf and had the best concept. However, when the complex burned down in 1997, those interested resigned. At the end of 1998 the municipal housing association Gesobau acquired the site and the buildings for around one million German marks . With Anja Raneburger and André Fröhlich, already shareholdings in the Glienicker Schlosshof Remise , the housing company found new tenants who wanted to rebuild the historic inn. The remains of the fire were removed and in June 2000 the operators opened a makeshift restaurant with a tent, pavilion and containers. The reconstruction of the terraces on the Orankesee according to the historical model did not take place until the mid-2010s, the new gastronomy is limited to the Oranke am See beer garden, which is open in summer , for which a wooden octagonal pavilion was set up.

Perspectives in the 21st Century

In 2006, the Obersee & Orankesee e. V. founded, in which numerous residents in particular volunteer. In the following years, bigger goals were considered - both lakes have to be completely renovated and the park (s) around both bodies of water are to be redesigned, including the construction of a jetty on Lake Orankesee - the estimated costs are around 2 million euros .

Along Oberseestrasse, a loose development with city villas is to be created, the sale or rental of which (later conversion into a private foundation) could finance the construction of a citizens' forum at Orankesee instead of the unrealized new tavern by the lake for around eight million euros. Architecture students and Thomas Hillig's office had already developed specific plans for this, Mies-Forum or Mies-van-der-Rohe-Forum was chosen as the name - in a sense as a counterpart to the already existing Mies-van-der-Rohe House ( House Lemke ) based on the architectural style of modernism. After agreement had already been reached on the project with the building council of the district and the landowners, there were problems with the next steps, because the Berliner Wasserbetriebe wanted to set up two clarification basins on the areas intended for the forum . The long-term safeguarding of the water quality has top priority for everyone involved - therefore a round table should now solve the problems and help clarify the future of the park. The original schedule, the start of construction of the villas in 2010 and the inauguration of the forum in 2012, was not met.

fauna and Flora

The Orankesee is an official fishing water with abundant fish stocks. The Lichtenberg Nature and Green Space Office identifies the following fish species here: eel , bitterling , lead , grass carp , gudgeon , pike , crucian carp , carp , roach , rudd , tench , stickleback and pikeperch . The promenade and smaller walking paths are planted with numerous shrubs and trees, with a particularly large number of linden trees defining the character. A field maple on the south bank of the lake is marked as a natural monument .

Events in and on Lake Orankesee

Since 1979 the Berlin seals , a division of the Bergmann-Borsig sports association, have been using the Orankesee open-air pool in the winter months to go ice bathing or winter bathing .

In 2007 the companies Camp4 (a Berlin outdoor retailer) and Kanu-Connection organized a spring festival, called Orankecamp, here in the lido of the lake. Since then there has been an annual repetition of the workshop with campfire romance and the fair for outdoor professionals and families. A cardboard boat race and canoe races serve as visitor attractions for young and old .

In summer 2009 the Orange Open Triathlon established itself here. This event for children, adolescents and adults includes competitions for amateurs graduated by age: (1) 100 meters swimming, 2.6 kilometers cycling and 1.2 kilometers running or (2) 250 meters swimming, 3.9 kilometers cycling and 2 kilometers To run. An additional program for visitors offers climbing action and a BMX - course . The event is jointly organized by local initiatives, citizens and free and public sponsors.

A legend about the lake

Hiker is pulled into a pond by water creatures ( John William Waterhouse : Hylas and the Nymphs , 1896, detail)

According to legend, the name of the lake is said to come from a beautiful Norwegian princess. She loved a Viking, but was unfaithful to him in his absence. As a punishment, the princess was condemned to live forever as a water maiden . She was assigned a small lake near the village of Hohenschönhausen for this purpose. Together with mermaids who were already living there, she planted reeds and shrubbery on the shoreline. On moonlit nights the creatures came to the surface and played all sorts of games with lots of laughter. A wanderer, once hearing this, forced his way through the reeds to watch the beautiful maidens. The sight enchanted him so much that he finally followed the mermaids into the water. Nobody saw the water maidens and the lonely strollers again. However, Princess Oranke is said to appear on full moon nights and spread her magic. Therefore every man must be careful not to approach the lake on such a night, because he too would have to plunge into the water after all.
