Lion fighter is a bronze sculpture by the German sculptor Albert Wolff based on a design by Christian Daniel Rauch . Depicted is a rider on a rearing horse who is about to pierce a lion lying on the ground with his lance . The sculpture was made by the Hermann Gladenbeck foundry and erected in 1861 on the western stringer of the staircase leading to the Lustgarten of the Altes Museum in Berlin . The sculpture Amazon on horseback by August Kiß , which is the counterpart to the lion fighter , is located on the eastern stringer . Both groups of figures weigh about two to three tons each .
