Lúcio de Mendonça (born March 10, 1854 in Piraí , Rio de Janeiro , † November 23, 1909 in Rio de Janeiro ; full name Lúcio Eugênio de Meneses e Vasconcelos Drummond Furtado de Mendonça ) was a Brazilian lawyer, journalist, magistrate and writer and "Father" of the Academia Brasileira de Letras .

biography

Lúcio de Mendonça was born to Salvador Furtado de Mendonça and Amália de Meneses Drummond. After the early death of his father, he was sent to São Gonçalo do Sapucaí in Minas Gerais in 1859 .

In 1871 he began to study law, which he had to interrupt for two years due to his republican sentiments. During this time he went to Rio de Janeiro, where he worked with his brother Salvador de Mendonça for a republican magazine. He met numerous writers and intellectuals, among them Machado de Assis , to whom he dedicated the preface to his first publication Névoas matutinas .

After graduating in 1878, he returned to São Gonçalo do Sapucaí and began a political career as a vereador. In addition to his commitment to republicanism (Brazil was still an empire at that time) he was also active in literature and wrote short stories. After the proclamation of the republic in 1889, he held numerous offices. From 1895 he worked at the highest Brazilian court ( Supremo Tribunal Federal ).

Under a pseudonym he also continued his literary activity and continued to publish in magazines. In 1896, together with the writers Machado de Assis and Joaquim Nabuco , he initiated the founding of the Academia Brasileira de Letras , a literary academy based on the model of the Académie française .

In the last years of his life he lost his sight due to an illness, so that he had to resign from his offices.
