Gilles Bernheim
Gilles Bernheim (born May 30, 1952 in Aix-les-Bains ) is a French rabbi . He was elected Chief Rabbi ( Grand Rabbin ) of France in June 2008 . His tenure began in January 2009.
Born in 1952 into a Jewish family from Alsace with Eastern European roots, he studied at the yeshiva in Netiwot and then in Jerusalem after graduating from French school in Israel . From 1978 to 1996 he was a student rabbi. He was then rabbi of the Great Synagogue of Paris from 1997 until he took up his new post as Grand Rabbi in 2009, succeeding Joseph Sitruk (* 1944).
At the beginning of April 2013, the French media reported on allegations of plagiarism against Bernheim; he is accused of copying long passages from the works of other authors in his book Quarante Méditations Juives , among others. a. by Jean-François Lyotard and Elie Wiesel . In his 15-page essay Mariage homosexuel, homoparentalité et adoption: Ce que l'on oublie souvent de dire (" Homosexual marriage, homo-parenting and adoption: What one often forgets to say") numerous literal takeovers were found. He also manipulated his résumé and invented a degree in philosophy. Bernheim resigned on April 11, 2013. His interim successor in office was Michel Gugenheim .
